Pieria Events Promote Greek Alternative Tourism Experiences

The alternative tourism offerings of Pieria, Central Macedonia, will be highlighted through a number of cultural, religious and gastronomy events, held under the auspices of the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO).

From late September through October, residents and visitors of the region can enjoy cycling tours to Orthodox churches, a culinary festival on the slopes of the Pierian Mountains, and an international festival of ancient drama, music, and sports for students.

“These events promote the region’s diverse tourism offerings internationally, while showcasing the numerous alternative tourism options available to visitors,” the GNTO said in an announcement.

2nd Pilgrimage Bike Race

On September 29, the 2nd Pilgrimage Bike Race will take place along a 15 km route, starting from the Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Aeginio, passing through churches in the Municipality of Pydna-Kolindros, and concluding at the Church of Saint Georgios in Makrygialos.

Organized in collaboration with local institutions, the initiative aims to showcase unique pilgrimage monuments while allowing participants to experience the region’s picturesque landscapes.

At the conclusion of the races, a ceremony will be held to award Pieria the “Bike Friendly Destination” label, certifying that the region meets the criteria for the development of bicycle tourism.

4th Mountain and Forest Gastronomy Festival

Organized by the Municipality of Katerini, the event will take place in Elatochori from October 18 to 20. During the festival, local products will be showcased through cooking sessions led by renowned chefs.

The program includes a Master Chef Kids event with specialized educators and cooks, hands-on nature experiences such as hiking, yoga, and barbecuing in the forest accompanied by traditional music, and a large concert.

Additionally, an event dedicated to local wines will be held on October 18. The event will feature the participation of wine enthusiasts, chefs, journalists, travel bloggers, and influencers. During the event, the new logo for the region’s wineries will be unveiled.

15th “Olympia in Dion” International Youth Meeting

Until September 30, the 15th “Olympia in Dion” International Youth Meeting of Ancient Drama, Music, and Sports, will be held at the ancient theater of Dion.

The event sees over 1,000 students from Greece and abroad have been presenting ancient tragedies and comedies from around the world, while 500 athletes from 35 countries are participating in the World Championship of Ancient Greek Wrestling held in the same period.
