Building on the legacy of the European Destinations of Excellence (EDEN) competition, the European Green Pioneer of Smart Tourism competition provides a platform for Europe’s most sustainable tourism destinations to showcase their exemplary initiatives. Initiatives such as the installation of photovoltaic LED public lighting, smart bus stops, and electric bicycle charging points demonstrate a strategic commitment to energy-efficient infrastructure. Furthermore, the municipality’s continuous efforts to educate and engage the community on these projects are crucial to their long-term success. The destination’s commitment to sustainability deeply permeates the local community, with initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality of daily life for its citizens. Notable among these are the “BeePathNet” urban beekeeping project, educational programs, and tree planting events. The small town in Halkidiki was recognized for its implementation of the Consumeless Tourism Model, aimed at reducing resource consumption and waste in the tourism industry. The town’s broader sustainable energy practices ensure significant benefits for both residents and visitors. Nea Propontida has also introduced facilities for people with disabilities on its beaches, including unassisted sea access systems, solar-powered changing rooms, and accessible showers. Furthermore, efforts are underway to enhance accessibility at cultural sites, such as the fortification wall of Kassandra and the renowned Petralona Cave. European Green Pioneer of Smart Tourism 2025 shortlist Seven cites were shortlisted in total for the 2025 European Green Pioneer of Smart Tourism competition. Besides Nea Propontida in Greece, the list includes Aveiro, Portugal; Benidorm, Spain; Jurmala and Liepāja in Latvia; Panevėžys, Lithuania; and Sliven in Bulgaria. Finalists are required to present their proposals to a European Jury on November 26 and 27, where the Green Smart Tourism Pioneer 2025 will be selected. The winning destination will be recognized as a leader in tourism sustainability, dedicated to the objectives of the European Green Deal, and will receive specialized communication and promotional support at the European level throughout 2025.
