Nea Propontida, a coastal destination in Halkidiki, has been named a finalist for the “2025 European Green Pioneer of Smart Tourism” title.

Building on the legacy of the European Destinations of Excellence (EDEN) competition, the European Green Pioneer of Smart Tourism competition provides a platform for Europe’s most sustainable tourism destinations to showcase their exemplary initiatives.

The Greek destination Nea Propontida was recognized for its remarkable achievements in environmental conservation and enhancing the quality of life for both residents and visitors

Launched by the European Commission, the competition aims to promote sustainable tourism in lesser-known destinations bringing value to the economy, the planet, and the people.

According to the Commission, Nea Propontida has implemented innovative solutions to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions, underscoring its commitment to a sustainable future.

Initiatives such as the installation of photovoltaic LED public lighting, smart bus stops, and electric bicycle charging points demonstrate a strategic commitment to energy-efficient infrastructure. Furthermore, the municipality’s continuous efforts to educate and engage the community on these projects are crucial to their long-term success.

The destination’s commitment to sustainability deeply permeates the local community, with initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality of daily life for its citizens. Notable among these are the “BeePathNet” urban beekeeping project, educational programs, and tree planting events.

The small town in Halkidiki was recognized for its implementation of the Consumeless Tourism Model, aimed at reducing resource consumption and waste in the tourism industry. The town’s broader sustainable energy practices ensure significant benefits for both residents and visitors.

Nea Propontida has also introduced facilities for people with disabilities on its beaches, including unassisted sea access systems, solar-powered changing rooms, and accessible showers. Furthermore, efforts are underway to enhance accessibility at cultural sites, such as the fortification wall of Kassandra and the renowned Petralona Cave.
