The announcement followed a meeting between Thessaly Governor Dimitris Kouretas and Skiathos Mayor Thodoris Tzoumas on the island. During the meeting, discussions centered on utilizing financial tools such as the National Strategic Reference Framework (NSRF) and the Thessaly Region Public Investment Program. Key topics included improving services offered to tourists and promoting tourism on the island. Governor Kouretas emphasized the vital role of the Civil Protection Center on Skiathos, which has significantly enhanced visitors’ sense of safety—an important factor in choosing Skiathos as a vacation destination. This summer, Skiathos experienced increased tourist flows. According to data from Fraport Greece, which operates and manages the island’s airport, British tourists contributed significantly to the uptick in visitation, followed by travelers from Italy, Austria, and Germany. One of the first projects agreed upon between the regional authority and the municipality is a 742,000-euro initiative aimed at enhancing the energy efficiency of the local high school building. In a subsequent meeting with representatives from the local police station, coast guard, and fire department, Governor Kouretas was briefed on the municipality’s plans to construct a marina and a new dock at the island’s port, funded by the Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund (HRADF). Discussions also included plans to further enhance the island’s maritime connections with the mainland throughout the year. Cultural events in the pipeline Additionally, Governor Kouretas informed Mayor Tzoumas about available funding that would enable the municipality to organize additional cultural events. The regional budget for cultural initiatives amounts to 50 million euros.
