Heraklion Emerges as Key Player in Mediterranean Cruise Tourism

The Port of Heraklion, located on the Greek island of Crete, has solidified its position as one of the most sought-after cruise ship destinations in the Mediterranean, experiencing a 53.83 percent annual increase in passenger arrivals during the first nine months of 2024.

According to the Heraklion Port Authority, a total of 208 cruise ships have docked at the port since the beginning of the year, reflecting a 16.20 percent increase compared to the same period in 2023. In total, 422,996 passengers visited the island during January-September.

Additionally, Heraklion is evolving into a preferred homeport for cruise operations, with 26 cruise ships selecting it as their embarkation and disembarkation point during the first three quarters of this year. Specifically, 54,000 cruise passengers embarked from Heraklion, while 49,000 disembarked, underscoring the port’s strategic importance for cruise tourism in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Heraklion Port Authority CEO Minas Papadakis said the port’s success in attracting increasing numbers of tourists.

“This achievement is rooted in the balance between tourist development and the protection of the surrounding natural environment,” he said.

In 2024, the demographics of cruise passengers visiting Heraklion reveal that 26.43 percent were Germans, 18.19 percent were Americans, 13.79 percent were British, and 7.05 percent were Spanish.
