Naxos recently made a strong impression on the British travel market through a special familiarization (fam) trip organized by the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO), showcasing the island as a leading sustainable tourism destination.

Held in mid-September, the trip was organized in collaboration with the Municipality of Naxos, the South Aegean Region, the Cyclades Preservation Fund, and TTG, a prominent tourism journal known for its “Sustainable Ambassadors” program. This initiative was supported by GNTO’s branch in Great Britain and Ireland.

Participants included travel agents from leading platforms such as Travel Counsellors, Not Just Travel, and The Holiday Village, as well as a journalist from TTG.

The itinerary featured visits to an organic farm, an apiary (bee yard), and olive oil and citrus distillery museums, all promoting local and sustainable practices. The guests also explored the island’s mountainous villages, participated in cooking lessons using organic ingredients, baked in traditional wood ovens, tasted locally produced cheeses, and met with representatives from the Naxos Wildlife Protection Club.

Impressed by the sustainable tourism activities on offer, the travel agents indicated they would feature Naxos as a “Sustainability Ambassador” destination on their platforms.

Eleni Skarveli, head of GNTO UK & Ireland, accompanied the group during the trip.

Articles detailing the experiences from the Naxos trip are expected to be published in October.
