Ferries Greek Ferry Services to Halt October 22-23 Due to 48-Hour Strike by GTP editing team 4 October 2024 written by GTP editing team 4 October 2024 0 comments Share 0FacebookTwitterLinkedinWhatsappEmail 27 Ferries throughout Greece will be halted from October 22 to 23 due to a 48-hour strike announced by the Panhellenic Seamen’s Federation (PNO). The strike is in protest over “unresolved requests” for a 12 percent wage increase and concerns regarding working conditions on passenger ferries. The seamen have raised concerns over the rising cost of living, emphasizing that the growing profits in the shipping industry have not benefited the workforce accordingly, contributing to increased financial pressure. Additionally, PNO is protesting the fact that many passenger and high-speed vessels have reduced their annual operational schedule to just four months, effectively turning sailors into “seasonal employees”. According to the federation, the Greek Shipowners Association for Passenger Ships (SEEN) has yet to agree to a discussion addressing workers’ concerns, leading to the strike. “Safe maritime transport is impossible without seafarers who have well-defined rights,” PNO officials said. Travelers with ferry tickets for the affected dates are advised to check with their travel agents or local port authorities for more information.
