Destinations news Commission Proposes EU Digital Travel App for Easier and Safer Journeys by GTP editing team 9 October 2024 written by GTP editing team 9 October 2024 0 comments Share 0FacebookTwitterLinkedinWhatsappEmail 22 Photo source: European Commission The European Commission on Tuesday adopted two proposals to digitalize passports and identity cards – known as the “EU Digital Travel Application” – for individuals traveling to and from the Schengen area. With nearly 600 million physical crossings recorded in 2023, the Commission highlights the need to expedite border controls and facilitate smoother travel while maintaining high security standards. The proposals introduce a common framework for travelers to create and store digital travel credentials, which are electronic versions of passport data — including the holder’s facial image — stored on mobile devices. These voluntary digital documents will streamline border crossings by allowing travelers to submit their credentials for advance checks. According to the Commission, the initiative aims to enhance freedom of movement, reduce administrative burdens, and improve border control efficiency by enabling authorities to focus on crime detection. Data protection is prioritized, requiring user consent for processing. “Digital passports are a major step forward in strengthening security in the Schengen area and making travel easier. They will allow border guards to quickly approve genuine travelers and better target suspects of crime and terrorism,” said Ylva Johansson, Commissioner for Home Affairs. The proposals are now subject to agreement by the Council and the European Parliament. Once adopted, the EU Digital Travel Application and necessary technical standards will be developed, making the application available for all EU and non-EU citizens with a biometric passport or EU identity card traveling to or from the Schengen Area. The digital travel app is expected to be available by 2030, allowing for storage of digital travel credentials in the European Digital Identity wallet.
