As autumn peaks, Condé Nast Traveler named Crete, Rhodes, and Kos among the 13 best European destinations to visit in October. Laura Fowler, the magazine’s editor, highlighted Greece as an ideal shoulder-season destination, with the mainland’s southern coast and Greek islands staying warm well into October. “From dreamy Italian hideouts to Greek isle idylls and the sandy shores of Turkey’s southern coast, these are our favorite hot places in Europe in October,” Laura Fowler writes. Crete: “A myth made real” Rethymno, Crete. The average high in October is 24°C. “The birthplace of Zeus, Aphrodite, Apollo, and all Western civilization, Crete is a myth made real,” Fowler describes. Away from the hustle and bustle of the summer season, travelers can wander the ancient temples and the Palace of Knossos, enjoying meals at family-run restaurants in hillside villages, as Cretan cuisine gains widespread acclaim. Rhodes: The honeymoon destination of Jackie O and Aristotle Onassis Saint Paul’s gate on Rhodes. The island where Aristotle Onassis and Jackie O honeymooned enjoys hot, sunny days even in November, with cooler evenings, while the sea stays pleasantly warm. The editor highlights the mosaic-stone lanes of old Lindos, and the island’s rich history and culture, which can captivate any traveler. “October is the perfect time to visit to avoid sweat impairing your views of ancient architecture,” Fowler writes. Kos combines stunning beaches with Roman-Greek landmarks Kos, Greece. Another gem of the Dodecanese, Kos springs to life at the end of March, staying vibrant until early autumn, before taking a brief pause until the next spring. “It’s as well-known for its ancient Roman and Greek landmarks as it is for its stunning beaches and crystal-clear waters, so it’s a great place for intergenerational escapes where those with itchy feet team up with committed beach bums,” Fowler says. Among the other destinations on the Condé Nast Traveler list are Lanzarote, Bodrum Peninsula, Cyprus, Sicily, Calabria, and Malta.
