The city of Piraeus, home to Greece’s largest port, will establish a twinning agreement with the port city of Aktau in Kazakhstan.

As part of this initiative, representatives from the Greek municipality recently visited Aktau and Kazakhstan’s capital, Astana. This visit aimed to strengthen the friendship and cooperation between Piraeus and Aktau, laying the groundwork for future collaborative initiatives at the local government level.

Dimitris Arapis, a municipal councilor in Piraeus responsible for the Construction Permits service, and Vasilis Tataropoulos, the general secretary of the Municipality of Piraeus, met with Aktau’s mayor, Abilkair Baipakov, to discuss potential collaborations in shipping, energy projects, and port infrastructure. Aktau is located on the eastern shores of the Caspian Sea.

The two Greek officials also met with Nurdaulet Kilybay, the governor of the Mangystau Region, where discussions focused on social initiatives. Additionally, they held a meeting with Greece’s ambassador to Kazakhstan, Efthalia Kakiopoulou, to explore bilateral relations and cooperation opportunities between Piraeus and various municipalities in Kazakhstan.

Arrangements were made for local government officials from Kazakhstan to visit Piraeus in the near future, as both parties seek common grounds for cooperation.
