Navagio Beach, Zakynthos.

The management of Zakynthos’ famed Shipwreck Beach (Navagio) will be handed over to the municipality, as announced by Deputy Minister to the Greek Prime Minister, Thanasis Kontogeorgis.

During a recent visit to the Ionian island with other government officials, Kontogeorgis confirmed that the revenue generated from the popular tourist destination will now be directed to the Municipality of Zakynthos. A small portion of the income will be retained by the Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency (NECCA) and the Ministry of Economy and Finance.

Kontogeorgis also revealed that the Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund (HRADF) is spearheading efforts to protect the highly visited beach. The necessary permits are expected to be secured soon, allowing restoration and maintenance work to commence by early 2025.

One of Greece’s most-visited beaches, Navagio has been closed to the public due to safety risks.

In addition to the updates on Shipwreck Beach, officials introduced several infrastructure projects for Zakynthos, with a total budget of 370 million euros. These projects include port deepening, the construction of a floating marina, improvements in waste management, and other essential developments aimed at enhancing the island’s infrastructure.

The government delegation visiting Zakynthos included Kontogeorgis, Deputy Minister of Economy and Finance Nikos Papathanasis, Deputy Minister of Health Marios Themistocleous, Deputy Minister of Agricultural Development and Food Christos Kellas, and HRADF CEO Dimitris Politis.
