Two Athenian Bars Among the World’s Best for 2024

Drink aficionados across the world recently ranked two Greek bars in Athens among the World’s 50 Best Bars, celebrating their refined cocktails and excellent hospitality.

The World’s 50 Best Bars provides a definitive list of the world’s best drinking venues, voted for by an Academy of more than 700 experts worldwide. The list has been published annually since 2009 and has become the most anticipated ranking for drinks professionals and cocktail lovers across the world, with the awards the highlight of the bar industry calendar.

Located in the heart of Athens, Line bar climbed from 12th last year to secure the sixth spot in the top ten, while Baba au Rum returned to the list, ranking 17th.

Hidden on 37 Agathodemonos Street, the Line impressed experts with its industrial atmosphere and cutting-edge techniques of its bartenders.

Once an art gallery, the bar is now home to Athens cocktail royalty Vasilis Kyritsis and Nikos Bakoulis, who aim to “redefine craft bartending” with both timeless creations and innovative drinks inspired by their own vision.

“Here, they don’t just mix and serve products, they also make many of them on site,” experts said.

“That means back-of-house stainless-steel tanks gently fermenting with the season’s bounty, the latest of them being a strawberry wine, a ferment of yellow and white peach and a winter melon vermouth.”

Experts recommend visitors try the Alexander, made with strawberry wine, and the Peach Mojito.

Baba au Rum

As its name reveals, the Baba aur Rum bar is well known for premium rum selection, boasting over 400 labels and expertly crafted versions of tropical classics like the Supremus No.58.

Located on 6 Klitiou Street, the bar was the brainchild of Thanos Prunarus, who sought to transform the drinking scene in the city center.

“With great music and a design inspired by the Modernism movement, Baba au Rum is a sophisticated drinking den that’s very easy to fall in love with,” experts highlighted.

Mexico City’s Handshake Speakeasy crowned The Best Bar in North America and The World’s Best Bar, marking first time a bar from Mexico has claimed the No.1 spot in the list.
