Greece Nominates Harry Theoharis for Secretary General of the World Tourism Organization

Harry Theoharis, a member of the Hellenic Parliament and former Greek tourism minister, has been nominated by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to serve as the new Secretary General of the World Tourism Organization (UN Tourism). The announcement was made by Greek government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis during a press briefing on Tuesday, October 29.

“The Prime Minister met with New Democracy MP Harry Theoharis and nominated him as Greece’s candidate for the position of Secretary General of the World Tourism Organization,” Marinakis stated. He emphasized that this role presents Greece with the opportunity for more active participation in shaping international tourism policy.

“This nomination will further enhance the international image of our country, promote Greek tourism, and facilitate the creation of strategic alliances,” he added.

Theoharis served as Greece’s tourism minister from June 2019 until September 2021.

Upon his nomination, he expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister, stating, “This is an extraordinary honor and an important responsibility. The nomination reflects the strong position that Greece has achieved in the global tourism community.”

He highlighted Greece’s status as a leader in tourism development, saying, “Our country has earned respect and recognition as a destination of international significance and allure, combining authentic hospitality with modern, sustainable practices.”

Notably, Theoharis was minister during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“During those challenging years, Greece not only persevered but also stood out globally, demonstrating effective crisis management,” he said, expressing pride in serving as tourism minister during one of the most challenging periods in the industry’s history.

“Through hard work, often exceeding limits, but always collectively and compassionately, we turned the crisis into an opportunity for Greece. We managed to reopen tourism under unimaginably adverse conditions, implementing innovative health protocols and welcoming millions of visitors while ensuring the safety of travelers, workers, and residents.”

Regarding the position of Secretary General of the World Tourism Organization, Theoharis stated its significance for Greece’s prestige in the global tourism market.

“This role will strengthen our international image, promote the values of Greek tourism, and foster strategic alliances. It also allows Greece to actively participate in shaping international tourism policy. In an era filled with challenges such as climate change, green transition, overtourism, and geopolitical developments, it is essential for the World Tourism Organization to respond effectively to the demands of our time.”
