The Region of Peloponnese is enhancing its natural routes with new funding to develop a trail network, boosting the destination’s appeal for hiking tourism.
Leveraging the newly launched “Creation of a National Network of Paths and Hiking Routes” project, regional authorities secured over 2.9 million euros to proceed with mapping the network. Officials note that this is the largest funding amount received by any municipality or region nationwide.
“The trail network development in the Peloponnese is a strategic effort to promote and sustainably manage hiking and trekking experiences, aligned with the region’s new Place Brand,” officials stated.
Trail cleaning and preservation spans 2,000 km
The project covers the leveling, cleaning, and mapping of nearly 2,000 km of trails across all regional units, while also boosting intangible assets such as marketing, networking, and digital resources.
The network will span the municipalities of Corinth, Tripoli, Loutraki-Perachora-Agioi Theodoroi, North Kynouria, and Hermionida, with additional municipalities awaiting final approval for their proposals.
Efforts aim to establish the Peloponnese as a leading destination for hiking tourism, blending natural landscapes with cultural and culinary experiences. Additionally, tourism activities will extend across the region year-round.
“The integrated policy enables the Peloponnese Region to greatly enhance the prospects for walking tourism, promising long-term benefits for local communities and the economy,” regional authorities said..
To date, local communities, groups, and associations have maintained much of the Peloponnese’s trails, supporting the project’s sustainable development.
