Republican Donald Trump, the 45th President of the United States, has reclaimed the presidency, defeating Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in the November 5 elections. With a key win in Wisconsin, Trump secured the 270 electoral votes necessary for victory, becoming the 47th president of the US.

Addressing jubilant supporters in Florida, Trump stated: “We’ve been through so much together, and today you showed up in record numbers to deliver a victory. This was something special, and we’re going to pay you back.”

Trump’s makes historic comeback

Trump’s win marks a rare historical milestone, making him only the second US president in history, after Grover Cleveland in 1892, to win back the presidency after losing a previous election.

Trump’s campaign focused on a wide range of popular concerns, including rising living costs, inflation, international trade agreements, border security, and promises to end ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. A key aspect of his platform was tax cuts, a proposition that resonated with many voters.

Trump also adopted a combative strategy, criticizing his opponent, Kamala Harris, with remarks questioning her competence. His campaign style mirrored tactics from his 2016 race against Hillary Clinton, where he targeted his rival with sharp personal attacks.

As election night turned into Wednesday morning, Harris remained silent, though she was expected to address her supporters later in the day.

Trump’s message: “Make America Great Again”

Donald Trump’s campaign message has remained consistent: “Make America Great Again”. This slogan not only propelled him to victory in 2016, defeating both his Republican rivals and Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, but also resonated strongly with voters in his 2024 comeback. While Clinton won the popular vote in 2016, Trump secured the necessary electoral votes to clinch the presidency.

Comeback at age 78

Trump, now 78, has made history as the oldest person to ever be elected US president. According to the Associated Press, his victory in the 2024 election marks an “extraordinary political comeback”. Despite facing numerous legal challenges, including felony charges and two assassination attempts, Trump’s determination has driven his return to the White House.

The US Supreme Court, with three justices appointed by Trump, recently issued a ruling that grants presidents broad immunity from prosecution. As he enters his second term, Trump has vowed to surround himself with loyalists committed to his agenda, promising an ambitious slate of executive orders and policy proposals to implement quickly.

World leaders congratulate Trump

World leaders have extended congratulations to Donald Trump on his victory in the 2024 US presidential election.

Nikos Christodoulides, President of Cyprus, also offered his congratulations, stating: “I look forward to continuing to work on expanding and reinforcing the strategic partnership between Cyprus and the U.S., and advancing our transatlantic relationship.”

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, warmly congratulated Trump, emphasizing the strong partnership between the European Union and the United States.

“His leadership will again be key to keeping our alliance strong. I look forward to working with him to advance peace through strength in NATO,” said NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his readiness to continue collaborating, saying, “I am ready to work together as we did for four years… with your conviction and mine.”

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer affirmed that the UK government stands “shoulder to shoulder” with the US in defense of shared values of freedom, democracy, and enterprise.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was quick to praise Trump’s “historic return”, calling it a “powerful recommitment to the great alliance between Israel and America”.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan hoped for stronger US-Turkey relations, emphasizing that global crises, especially the Palestinian issue and the Russia-Ukraine war, should come to an end.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who has called for more U.S. and Western support to counter Russia’s invasion, welcomed Trump’s commitment to “peace through strength,” believing it could help bring peace to Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin refrained from commenting on the U.S. election results. The Kremlin responded cautiously, stating that time would tell if Trump’s rhetoric on ending the Ukraine war would translate into action.

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, on X, celebrated the apparent defeat of Kamala Harris, stating, “Kamala is finished…let her keep cackling infectiously”.
