Passenger traffic at Athens International Airport (AIA) reached 27.57 million in the first ten months of 2024, marking a 12.9 percent increase over 2023 levels.

According to recently released data, domestic and international travelers rose by 7.3 percent and 15.5 percent, respectively.

In October alone, traffic hit 3.01 million, a 10 percent increase from the same month last year. Domestic and international passengers surpassed last year’s levels by 7.4 percent and 11.1 percent, respectively.

Flight volumes at AIA also climbed by 11.0 percent year-over-year, totaling 231,859 flights from January to October, with domestic and international flights up by 5.2 percent and 15.6 percent, respectively.

Athens Airport aiming to attract more international markets

“This year is progressing positively in terms of passenger traffic and flights,” said AIA Director of Communications & Marketing Ioanna Papadopoulou in a recent interview with the Athens News Agency. She noted that the high traffic levels, combined with strong partnerships with airlines and tourism bodies, have led to the introduction of new destinations and an increase in long-haul flights.

“These positive trends confirm our efforts to expand AIA’s network in collaboration with airlines, highlighting Athens’ appeal and the sustainable growth in travel and leisure,” Papadopoulou added. She highlighted that a strategic goal for AIA is to attract more international markets.

In 2025, AIA anticipates additional destinations, increased frequencies on existing routes, and the initial phases of a significant investment plan aimed at expanding the airport’s annual capacity. Planned developments include extending both the Main terminal, which handles most domestic and international flights, and the Satellite terminal, primarily used for low-cost airlines and easing peak season congestion at the main terminal.
