The village of Anogeia, located on the island of Crete, has been honored as one of the “Best Tourism Villages” by the World Tourism Organization (UN Tourism) for its exceptional cultural identity and rugged natural beauty.
The Best Tourism Villages initiative, launched by UN Tourism in 2021, seeks to promote rural tourism, preserve natural landscapes, safeguard cultural diversity, and uphold local traditions.
With this recognition, Anogeia becomes part of a growing global network, which now includes 254 villages from around the world. This year’s edition saw 55 villages selected from over 260 applications submitted by more than 60 UN Tourism Member States. Additionally, 20 villages were chosen for the Upgrade Program.
“Tourism is a key driver of inclusion, empowering rural communities to protect and cherish their rich cultural heritage while fostering sustainable development,” stated UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili.

Nestled on the slopes of Mt. Psiloritis, Anogeia, meaning “Highlands” in Greek, is a village steeped in myth and history. Known for its unique culture and the resilience of its inhabitants, Anogeia is a significant location on Crete.
This rugged mountain terrain is not only the birthplace of ancient legends but also hosts Zominthos, a key Minoan archaeological site. Visitors to Anogeia can immerse themselves in the local traditions, enjoy the vibrant music scene, and savor the delicious local cuisine, all while surrounded by stunning natural beauty.
According to the UNWTO, among the best experiences for travelers are the ecotourism adventures with nature guides, the interactive living history, and the Educational Centre of Astronomy & Astrophysics.
Around the word, 55 destinations received the “Best Tourism Village” label across different countries.
The program works to foster development and inclusion in rural areas, combat depopulation, advance innovation and value chain integration through tourism, and encourage sustainable practices.
The call for submissions for the fifth edition will take place in early 2025, opening a new opportunity for rural destinations to share their inspiring initiatives and get global recognition as rural development champions.
