Greek Parliament member and former Tourism Minister Harry Theoharis represented Greece at the 122nd UN World Tourism Organization (UN Tourism) Executive Council meeting in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia.

Theoharis, a candidate for the UN Tourism Secretary-General role, shared his vision for transitioning the organization into a new era of global tourism development.

The Executive Council serves as the UN Tourism’s governing body, ensuring the organization meets its objectives while adhering to its policies and budget. The council is pivotal in shaping strategic directions and addressing global tourism challenges.

During the event, Theoharis engaged with tourism ministers and national representatives, emphasizing the importance of Greece’s participation.

“Our presence at the 122nd UN Tourism Executive Council was crucial ahead of next spring’s elections for the new administration,” Theoharis stated, expressing optimism about his candidacy.

In discussions with representatives from the 35 member countries of the council, Theoharis outlined his strategy for revitalizing the organization while addressing members’ expectations.

“The universal message I bring back from Cartagena is the pressing need for a new chapter at UN Tourism,” he noted, highlighting his goal of transformative renewal.

During the 122nd UN Tourism Executive Council, the procedures and timelines for electing the next Secretary-General – with elections scheduled for May 2025 in Madrid, Spain – were finalized.

On the sidelines of the meeting, UN Tourism announced the latest inductees into its “Best Tourism Villages” network. Greece’s Anogeia, a village in Crete renowned for its cultural heritage and natural beauty, was recognized among the best.

“This award demonstrates that tourism can harmoniously coexist with culture, tradition, and environmental protection,” Theoharis said, celebrating the achievement as a testament to Greece’s enduring commitment to sustainable tourism.
