This year’s edition of the index is based on test data from more than 2,100,000 test takers around the world who took the EF Standard English Test (EF SET) or one of the firm’s English placement tests in 2023. Despite a global decline in English proficiency for the fourth consecutive year, Greece secured 8th place among 116 countries, demonstrating very high proficiency. Additionally, Greece ranked 7th in Europe, with its English proficiency scores showing consistent improvement over time. The Netherlands dominated the top 10 list as the country with the best English skill, followed by Norway, Singapore, Sweden, Croatia, Portugal, Denmark, and Austria. Furthermore, Athens ranked 11th in the 2024 capital city scores of the index, surpassing Warsaw, Cape Town, Budapest, Bratislava, Bucharest and Sofia. 41+ age group shows remarkable progress in English proficiency While starting lower, the 41 plus age group in Greece shows remarkable progress, possibly due to lifelong learning programs or professional development. In the ages of 18 to 20, the score shows steady growth, reflecting the increased emphasis on English education among younger students. Between the ages of 21-25 years, there is a noticeable rise, potentially influenced by higher education and early professional requirements. For the 26-30 age group, significant improvement is observed, likely driven by workplace demands and increased global exposure. Meanwhile, the 31-40 age bracket exhibits a steep upward trend, suggesting a strong focus on enhancing skills for career advancement The figures showed that in the period 2023-2024 males begin to slightly outperform females, showing a slight lead in the later years, highlighting equal access to English education and similar motivation to learn the language across genders.
