The regional authority’s strategic focus is based on recent research by INSETE, the research arm of the Greek Tourism Confederation (SETE), which identifies these countries as key sources of tourists to Greece. According to the regional authority, the UK, Germany, and Sweden not only represent some of Greece’s largest tourism markets, but they also account for a significant portion of year-round arrivals, with a continued upward trend in both air traffic and bookings. Germany stands as Greece’s largest tourism market, with over 4.7 million visitors, followed closely by the UK with 4.6 million. Sweden, notably, emerged as the second-highest market for Greece in 2023 based on average spending. Building on these strengths, the Region of Attica is focusing on these Northern European countries to further increase tourist arrivals to Athens, especially during the Christmas season. “We are continuing our focused outreach efforts, reintroducing Attica to Europe’s most dynamic tourism markets,” said Attica Governor Nikos Hardalias. “Our primary goal remains to increase visitor numbers while adhering to a responsible and sustainable tourism model.” Magical Christmas in Athens Photo source: Attica Region The campaign focuses on promoting Athens’ mild winter and its festive Christmas events as key elements of a unique and memorable travel experience. It promises visitors an unforgettable stay, highlighting the charm of the city during the holiday season. Launched on November 25, the campaign will run through December 31. It showcases vibrant images of Christmas in Athens, capturing the festive spirit of the city. The campaign will be featured across multiple platforms, including TV, online channels, public spaces, metro stations, shopping centers, and specially selected spots in major cities and capitals of the UK, Germany, and Sweden. “We are spreading the message that Attica is an ideal destination year-round,” Governor Hardalias highlighted. He further noted that the campaign’s goal is not only to attract visitors but also to encourage longer stays and higher tourism spending. This, in turn, provides ongoing support for Greek businesses and makes a significant contribution to the national economy. The Region of Attica encompasses the entire Athens metropolitan area, which consists of the city of Athens, the capital of Greece and the core city of the metropolitan area, as well as its surrounding suburban cities and towns.
