The prestigious event, held on Monday in Madeira, Portugal, recognized one Greek destination, eleven hotels, and one travel agency from Greece among the award winners, with organizers highlighting their achievements as setting a new standard for excellence in the global tourism industry. Founded in 1993, the WTA aims to acknowledge and celebrate excellence across all sectors of tourism. Often referred to as the “Oscars of the travel industry”, the awards are recognized globally as the ultimate mark of quality, with the winners setting the standard for tourism worldwide. “Our winners represent the pinnacle of tourism excellence, and I congratulate each of them for raising the benchmark of the global tourism economy,” WTA Founder Graham Cooke said. Athens named World’s Leading Cultural City Destination 2024 Athens Development and Destination Management Agency (ADDMA) CEO Ioannis Georgizas, along with Natasha Kefala and Maria Papadopoulou from This is Athens-Convention & Visitors Bureau, accepting the award, which highlights the rich history and vibrant culture that make Athens a unique global destination. In the spotlight at this year’s ceremony, Athens was named the “World’s Leading Cultural City Destination 2024”, further solidifying its status as a premier hub for culture and history enthusiasts worldwide. Earlier this year, Athens was also recognized as “Europe’s Leading City Break Destination 2024”, adding to its growing list of prestigious accolades. Greek hotels and travel agency receive accolades Mideast Travel Managing Director Katerina Mousbeh receiving the World Travel Award for 2024. In addition to Athens, 11 Greek hotels earned international recognition for their outstanding hospitality. Among the most notable were the Sani/Ikos and Domes Resorts groups, both celebrated for their exceptional service and luxurious offerings. Furthermore, the Greek travel agency Mideast Travel Worldwide was named the “World’s Leading Destination Management Company 2024”, retaining its European title in the same category.
