European Council Appoints New Commission for 2024-2029

The European Council has officially appointed the European Commission for the 2024-2029 term, effective December 1, 2024.

Ursula von der Leyen (Germany) will continue as President, with Kaja Kallas (Estonia) appointed as High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the Commission.

The announcement of the new Commission follows the consent given on November 27 by the European Parliament.

As outlined in Article 17(7) of the Treaty on European Union (TEU), the President, the High Representative, and other members of the Commission are subject to a vote of consent by the European Parliament. Following this consent, the European Council appoints the Commission by qualified majority.
