Patras has all the potential to become a leading cruise destination, according to Stefanos Gkikas, the Greek Deputy Minister for Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy.

Speaking at the recent “1st Patras Cruise” event held in the western Greece city, Gkikas outlined the government’s plans to enhance its port facilities in order to attract more cruise ships.

The deputy minister provided updates on the development of the city’s port, highlighting the plan for a dedicated cruise terminal and a new marina.

According to Gkikas, the Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund (HRADF) is spearheading the development, and the master plan for the project has already been approved by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs. It is currently under review by the Ministry of Environment before being submitted to the country’s Supreme Court, with the final step being the issuance of a presidential decree.

He highlighted that the Port of Patras plays a crucial role in the European transportation network, particularly the Orient/East-Med corridor, which connects the region to key European markets.

“The development of this port is expected to significantly boost both the local and national economy,” Gkikas said.

Additionally, he informed that the ministry is exploring the possibility of a joint concession for the ports of Katakolo and Patras to maximize synergies between the two, avoiding competition and fostering cooperation.

“Patras is ideally situated to become a top cruise destination, not only due to the city’s inherent charm but also because of the broader Achaia region, which offers rich cultural and natural attractions,” the deputy minister underlined.
