Photo source: Athens Municipality Athens officially kicked off this year’s holiday season with the lighting of a stunning 20-meter Christmas tree during a vibrant celebration at Syntagma Square. On Thursday afternoon, residents and visitors gathered to enjoy the melodies of the Athens Municipality Symphony Orchestra, which paraded from Ermou Street to Syntagma. The festivities continued with the Athens Big Band, accompanied by Greek vocalist Nefeli Fasouli, delivering captivating performances of cherished Christmas classics. “May this Christmas bring light, joy, health, and solidarity,” said Athens Mayor Haris Doukas as he initiated the lighting of the tree, marking the beginning of the holiday cheer. Residents and visitors alike can fully embrace the Christmas spirit through many events, including musical concerts, theatrical performances, storytelling sessions, educational programs, art workshops, outdoor film screenings, exhibitions, guided tours, and festive celebrations on both Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. Storytelling in Athens’ neighborhoods Photo source: Athens Municipality From December 21, 2024, to January 5, 2025, seven city squares will be transformed into enchanting storytelling hubs, featuring cozy tents, an array of books, and renowned artists ready to take kids on a journey to fantasy. Music events and concerts Photo source: Athens Municipality From December 24 to 26, Syntagma Square, the Maria Callas Museum, the Olympia Municipal Music Theater Maria Callas, and the Museum of Folk Art and Tradition “Aggeliki Hatzimichalis” will feature performances by popular artists, a fairy-tale opera, and concerts. Meanwhile, the municipality’s Symphony Orchestra will bring festive melodies to the streets of Athens. Highlights include the Athens Book Space in Eleftheria Park, the outdoor area of the Metropolis of Athens, and the parking lot of the Lycabettus Municipal Theater, offering an unforgettable drive-in experience overlooking festive Athens.
