In an effort to enhance the sense of security for its residents and visitors, the Municipality of Athens has introduced an innovative app designed to provide direct assistance to those within its administrative limits.

Dubbed “SafeAthens”, the new application is fully accessible to individuals with hearing impairments, ensuring inclusivity for all users. Through this app, residents and visitors will be able to report potential dangers or natural disasters in real-time.

“Safety is a fundamental right for every citizen, and we are offering a free and integrated digital protection shield to ensure that safety,” said Athens Mayor Haris Doukas. “The SafeAthens App is also the first in Greece to be accessible to the deaf community. It is an important tool that helps everyone feel safer on a daily basis.”

The SafeAthens app offers several key features. It allows users to alert close contacts about any dangers through SMS or push notifications, providing real-time location tracking. If a user is a victim of an attack, they can notify the police, sending their personal identification data and live tracking information. Additionally, users can send a message to two selected contacts to confirm their well-being after overcoming a threat or simply as a daily check-in.

A unique feature of the app is the ability to call for help by shaking the phone or any other device with the app installed. This function ensures that help is just “a shake away”, offering users peace of mind in any situation.

Another important function is the alarm feature, which calls for assistance from nearby individuals. If the alarm is active for more than 30 seconds, it automatically sends an SMS to the selected contacts — provided they also have the app installed — containing the user’s location and live tracking information.

The SafeAthens app was developed by DAEM S.A., the IT company of the Municipality of Athens.

“Our team utilized the latest GPS technologies and data management systems to create a tool that is both technically advanced and reliable,” said Lazaros Karaoulis, CEO of DAEM. “We focused on making the app user-friendly, prioritizing privacy protection, and ensuring it connects with key government services, making it a true ally in safeguarding our daily safety.”

The app is available for download here.
