The Greek Ministry of Infrastructure and Transportation recently presented plans for the extension of Athens Metro Line 2 to Acharnes, a municipality in the East Attica regional unit.

At an event held at the Municipality of Acharnes building, Greek Deputy Minister for Transportation, Vassilis Economou, highlighted the strategic importance of the extension, emphasizing its potential to significantly improve the daily lives of local residents by providing faster, safer, and more environmentally-friendly transportation.

Economou described the project as a historic milestone for Acharnes and the broader Attica region. He added that the connection of Acharnes, along with Agii AnargyriKamatero and Fyli, to the metro network would not only improve residents’ quality of life but also stimulate the local economy and create new developmental opportunities.

“With projects like this, we create potential, enhance people’s quality of life, and lay the groundwork for fair and sustainable development,” Economou said.

Deputy Minister for Infrastructure, Nikos Tachiaos, also spoke about the importance of the metro extension, calling it “one of the most beneficial projects for all.” He explained that it would not only provide sustainable urban transportation but also improve social mobility for the region.

Although the project timeline has not yet been finalized, Tachiaos confirmed that the Elliniko Metro company has been tasked with overseeing the planning and conducting feasibility and sustainability studies for the project.
