The 2024 cruise season for the island of Mykonos concluded in late November, marking a new record for the island, according to Mykonos Port Fund President Athanasios Kousathanas-Megas.

The island welcomed 768 cruise ships and over 1.29 million passengers during the year, surpassing the previous year’s figures of 749 ships and 1.19 million passengers.

“2024 was not just a record year for Mykonos, but also a year in which we focused on enhancing our infrastructure to improve the visitor experience,” Kousathanas-Megas said. “This year was significant as we succeeded in extending the cruise season, and in 2025, cruise ships will begin arriving in February and continue through December.”

The cruise season ended with the arrival of the “Island Princess,” a Coral-class ship from Princess Cruises, which celebrated the record year alongside local officials.

Infrastructure Improvements for a Sustainable Future

Kousathanas-Megas highlighted that spreading out the arrival of ships throughout the week was critical in alleviating pressures on local infrastructure. This approach, he explained, ensured a more comfortable and smoother experience for visitors.

Additionally, the island’s enhanced infrastructure, alongside the promotion of Mykonos’ cultural and gastronomical offerings, contributed positively to the island’s economy, showcasing its authenticity.

The port fund’s president outlined the ongoing investment in key infrastructure projects that aim to improve both the operational capacity and aesthetic appeal of the port. One major project involves the construction of four new docks for large vessels under the Archaeological Museum of Mykonos. The initiative is expected to improve connectivity between the old and new ports, easing passenger movement and enabling faster, more comfortable transportation.

Additionally, an innovative water recycling system is being installed at the port to significantly reduce water consumption.

“These projects are not only technical improvements but also strategic decisions aimed at enhancing the passenger experience while protecting the island’s natural environment, ensuring its long-term sustainability,” Kousathanas-Megas said.

Promoting local economy and sustainable tourism

In 2024, a strong emphasis was placed on supporting local commerce and showcasing Mykonos’ gastronomic and cultural heritage to cruise passengers. Kousathanas-Megas stressed that Mykonos is more than just a Greek tourist destination, highlighting the island’s efforts to offer a complete and integrated experience for visitors.

He also acknowledged the cooperation of various local authorities and services in ensuring the smooth operation of the port. These included municipal officials, the customs office, the Coast Guard, the Hellenic Police, boat operators, the Navigation Service, security companies, and tourism agents.

Together, these efforts contributed to providing high-quality services and a safe, enjoyable experience for passengers.
