Athens has emerged as a standout destination in 2024, achieving an impressive 17 percent year-on-year growth and securing a spot in travel intelligence provider ForwardKeys’ ranking of top-performing global destinations. This milestone underscores the city’s growing appeal among international travelers, fueled by its rich cultural heritage, vibrant urban atmosphere, and continuous enhancements in tourism infrastructure. Top performers for year-on-year growth Topping the list are Alicante and Budapest, both boasting remarkable 22 percent growth compared to 2023. Miami follows with an 18 percent increase, while Los Angeles ties with Athens at 17 percent, highlighting the strong performance of urban centers worldwide. Other cities rounding out the top ten include: Bacelona and Madrid (16 percent each), Rome (15 percent), Malaga (14 percent) and Milan (13 percent). According to ForwardKeys, these top performers for year-on-year growth reflect diverse travel preferences in 2024. Most popular destinations worldwide ForwardKeys also highlighted the world’s most popular destinations based on market share. Leading the pack in 2024 are London, Bangkok and Tokyo. London maintained its position as the world’s most visited destination, while Bangkok (+30 prcen) and Tokyo (+36 percent) emerged as strong contenders, reflecting their growing popularity with travellers through 2024. Top 10 destinations leading APAC’s recovery As Asia-Pacific gradually rebounds, ForwardKeys identified the 10 destinations leading the region’s recovery. APAC destinations showed strong post-COVID recovery through 2024, with Beijing and Guangzhou standing out as top performers. Impressive year-on-year growth from Nha Trang (+80 prcent), Shanghai (+77 percent), and Hong Kong (+44 percent) highlighted the wider region’s appeal. Leading destinations for Business Travel Business travel is also on the rise, with key destinations excelling in this sector. ForwardKeys’ data reveals that Shanghai led the global business travel sector (+63 percent), demonstrating its unmatched appeal for corporate travellers. Elsewhere, Kuala Lumpur (+28 percent), Bangkok (+23 percent), and Tokyo (+21 percent) emerged as key destinations for doing business through 2024.
