The European Commission has introduced a groundbreaking Flight Emissions Label (FEL) to provide transparent data on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for flights within and departing the EU.
Starting July 2025, passengers will see emissions in kilograms of CO₂ equivalent (kg CO₂eq) when booking tickets online, allowing for informed, sustainable travel choices.
Commissioner for Sustainable Transport Apostolos Tzitzikostas in an announcement highlighted the initiative’s role in fostering transparency and fair competition:
“The EU is making another significant step toward cleaner and more competitive European aviation.”
The label standardizes emissions reporting, accounting for factors like aircraft type, passenger load, and fuel used. Managed by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), the FEL also aims to discourage greenwashing and support the aviation sector’s transition to net-zero emissions by 2050.
Airlines can voluntarily join the scheme from February 2025, with EASA assigning the first labels by July. The FEL aligns with broader EU policies like ReFuelEU Aviation, focusing on sustainable aviation fuels and carbon reduction.
This initiative is expected to drive innovation, sustainability, and accountability in aviation, advancing Europe’s leadership in green transport solutions.
