Samos, a picturesque island in the North Aegean Sea, has been recognized by National Geographic as one of Greece’s most “unexpected” destinations for 2025, celebrated for its unique blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage.

In the Spanish edition of the magazine, Editor Josep M. Palau describes Samos as a “crossroads of Europe and Asia”, highlighting its rich history, lush landscapes, and authenticity. Traveling through Vathi, Karlovasi, Mount Kerkis and Pythagoreum, Palau explored cobblestone streets, Byzantine churches, serene beaches, and mountain paths showcasing Samos’ charm.

Palau praised key attractions like the Archaeological Museum of Samos, renowned for its colossal kouros statue, and historic sites like the Heraion sanctuary and the Evpalinos Tunnel, marvels that reflect the island’s ancient Greek and Byzantine heritage.

The island’s rugged terrain offers breathtaking views and secluded coves, further cementing its reputation as a haven of unspoiled beauty. According to Palau, Samos is a destination where natural wonders meet historical intrigue.

A commitment to authentic tourism

Speaking to the Athens News Agency, East Samos Mayor Paraskevas Papageorgiou described the island as an “oasis” of authenticity untouched by overtourism.

While commenting on National Geographic’s tribute he highlighted that Samos’ blend of forests, historical monuments, and genuine hospitality positions it as an international destination promoting wellbeing.

“Lush forests, invigorating activities, authentic hospitality, historical monuments, monasteries, churches, gastronomy, picturesque settlements and quality of services are integral components of the message we broadcast through international and domestic media,” Papageorgiou said

Deputy Mayor for Tourism Vangelis Marnezos echoed this sentiment, noting increased interest from the UK, Spain, and Switzerland, especially in off-season activities like hiking and mountaineering.

“Our goal is to promote Samos beyond the summer season, attracting visitors year-round,” he said.
