Syros, Greece.

The Region of the South Aegean has allocated 300,000 euros for the development of a groundbreaking digital tool aimed at enhancing the visitor experience in Ermoupolis, the capital of the Greek island of Syros.

Central to the project is the life and works of poet and songwriter, Manos Eleftheriou, who has a profound connection to the island and is widely beloved across Greece.

Titled “Digital Walk in Ermoupolis through the Literary and Research Work of Manos Eleftheriou,” the project has received approval from South Aegean Governor George Hatzimarkos and will be included in the “South Aegean 2021-2027” program, co-funded by the EU Regional Development Fund.

According to an announcement by the regional authority, the initiative focuses on the creation of an innovative digital tool that will guide visitors through the rich history and culture of Ermoupolis, focusing on the life and works of poet and songwriter, Manos Eleftheriou.

The project aims to utilize artificial intelligence (AI) to bring the culture and landmarks of the island to life.

The broader goal is to digitally connect the intangible cultural aspects of Ermoupolis — such as its history, music, and literature — with the town’s physical landmarks. This will create a seamless experience for visitors, allowing them to explore not only the architectural monuments and the town’s unique character but also the history, music, and the deep connection Manos Eleftheriou had with his hometown.

The tool will chart the evolution of this neoclassical town, which serves as the capital of both Syros and the Cyclades, from its historical origins to the present day.

Key features of the project are the following:

– Collection and verification of historical and cultural data
– Digitalization of photographs, videos, maps, and sound tours
– Creation of 3D models for six key buildings in Ermoupolis
– Establishment of a digital archive and interactive portal
– Development of an educational app and digital tour application, including audio guides
– Implementation of an AI chatbot to serve as a digital tour guide
– Digital signage for points of interest
– Translation of all materials into English and French
– Employee training to facilitate the use of the digital tools
– Advertising initiatives, including web marketing, crowdsourcing, and a conference

The project is set to begin on June 2, 2025, and is expected to be completed by June 30, 2027.

According to the regional authority, the initiative is part of the broader effort to enhance the cultural and tourist offerings of Syros and Ermoupolis.
