A large section of the motorway may be opened to traffic as early as the summer of 2025, according to reports. Connecting the two largest cities in the western Peloponnese, the motorway will be a key component of the Olympia Motorway, which links Athens to the port city of Patras. Upon completion, the Olympia National Road will become the third-longest highway in Greece, stretching over 277 kilometers. Auxiliary infrastructure Photo source: Olympia Odos The Patras-Pyrgos Motorway consists of two main sections. The first, covering a distance of 13 kilometers, involves the widening of the existing Patras – Pyrgos National Road from Mintilogli to Kato Achaia. The second section, measuring 62 kilometers, will establish a new road across the Ilida valley. The motorway will feature two lanes of traffic and one emergency lane in each direction, along with a central barrier to improve safety and driving comfort. The project includes a range of auxiliary infrastructure to improve accessibility, such as: – Eight exits connecting the motorway to cities, villages, and the Patras Industrial Zone – Two toll stations for traffic at Kato Achaia and Hanakia – Two side toll stations at Kato Achaia and Amaliada – 15 bridges, including a 240-meter-long bridge over the Pinios River – 27 overpasses, 37 underpasses, and 150 drainage systems – 7,250 meters of support walls – Two drivers’ service stations at Kareika and Pyrgos (in both directions) – One backup traffic control center at Pyrgos, which will also house the motorway’s traffic police – Two customer service stations at the toll stations of Kato Achaia and Hanakia Toll charges based on distance traveled Photo source: Olympia Odos The Patras-Pyrgos Motorway will implement a modern, hybrid toll system that charges based on the distance traveled, similar to the system already used on the Athens-Patras section of the road. Drivers will have the option to use the Olympia Pass, a system that records the distance traveled by each vehicle on the motorway and automatically calculates the appropriate toll charges. This system applies to all vehicles, except for motorcycles, ensuring fair tolling for all travelers.
