During a session titled “Island Matters – Port Infrastructures,” experts and stakeholders analyzed the challenges facing the islands, particularly regarding the green transformation and infrastructure upgrades. Discussions also included proposals for enhancing island infrastructure to meet modern demands. Government commitments and funding initiatives Deputy Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy Stefanos Gkikas emphasized the strategic importance of the islands for the Greek government, outlining current developments and future plans. “Island-related matters and integrated policies for our seas have taken center stage for the first time, and our government made this a priority,” said Gkikas. He highlighted significant investments, including 66 million euros secured through an agreement with the European Investment Bank for 350 water resource projects, focusing on desalination and improved water supplies. Additional measures, under the government’s “GR-Eco Islands” initiative, aim to address water shortages with a total budget of 280 million euros. The “GR-Eco Islands” initiative demonstrates the Greek government’s commitment to green and digital transformation, coupled with the decarbonization of the islands.
