The need to modernize Greece’s port infrastructure and improve the connectivity of Greek islands took center stage at the Greek Shipowners Association for Passenger Ships (SEEN) conference in Athens on Tuesday.

During a session titled “Island Matters – Port Infrastructures,” experts and stakeholders analyzed the challenges facing the islands, particularly regarding the green transformation and infrastructure upgrades. Discussions also included proposals for enhancing island infrastructure to meet modern demands.

Government commitments and funding initiatives

Deputy Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy Stefanos Gkikas emphasized the strategic importance of the islands for the Greek government, outlining current developments and future plans.

“Island-related matters and integrated policies for our seas have taken center stage for the first time, and our government made this a priority,” said Gkikas.

He highlighted significant investments, including 66 million euros secured through an agreement with the European Investment Bank for 350 water resource projects, focusing on desalination and improved water supplies. Additional measures, under the government’s “GR-Eco Islands” initiative, aim to address water shortages with a total budget of 280 million euros.

The “GR-Eco Islands” initiative demonstrates the Greek government’s commitment to green and digital transformation, coupled with the decarbonization of the islands. This innovative policy approach is designed to inspire global change while transforming Greek islands into sustainable and energy-efficient hubs.

Regarding port infrastructure, Gkikas announced that 350 million euros has been allocated for projects to be completed by 2027. “Despite challenges, the Transport Equivalent is being optimized to better meet the needs of island communities,” he added. “Our vision is for the islands to have modern infrastructure, sustainable energy supplies, and quality services by 2030.”

Challenges and opportunities in the Green transition

Secretary General of the Aegean and Island Policy, Manolis Koutoulakis, highlighted both the opportunities and hurdles of the green transformation.

“The green transformation presents both a challenge and an opportunity for our islands,” Koutoulakis said. He called for substantial investments and innovative funding models to support small and medium-sized businesses while reducing operational costs over time.

Industry calls for streamlined management

SEEN Vice President and Levante Ferries General Director Efstratios Apergis underscored the need to restructure Port Funds and address managerial and technical deficiencies. “Simplifying processes and supporting managerial infrastructure at Port Funds is essential for effective port management,” Apergis said.

Cyclades Chamber of Commerce President Ioannis Roussos highlighted the importance of improved coastal connectivity among Cyclades islands to meet residents’ needs and bolster local economies. “Rescheduling ferry itineraries in collaboration with all stakeholders is critical for enhancing connectivity and the daily lives of island residents,” he said.

Organized by SEEN, the “Modern Coastal Shipping Transportation, Island Sustainable Development” conference was held under the auspices of the Greek Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, the Ministry of National Economy and Finance, and the Ministry for the Environment and Energy.

The conference provided a platform for addressing pressing challenges and identifying actionable solutions to ensure the sustainable development of Greece’s island regions.
