The small town of Delphi, located in the mountains of Central Greece, has earned a spot on the New York Times’ annual list of the 52 Best Places to Go in 2025.

Curated by the New York Times’ travel editors and contributors, the list reflects a combination of trending destinations, lesser-known gems, and locations offering unique cultural, environmental, or historical experiences.

Located at the foot of Mount Parnassus, Delphi is renowned worldwide for its significant sanctuary of Greek antiquity and the famed oracle that once drew visitors from across the ancient world. Today, Delphi has become a magnet for travelers eager to experience its unique blend of cultural heritage, natural beauty, and outdoor mountain activities.

Ranked 29th, Delphi stood out as a year-round alternative to the popular but often crowded “Athens and islands” itinerary, showcasing the charm of Greece’s little-known highland culture. Emphasizing the area’s diversity, the list recommends visiting Delphi to hike through snow-capped mountains, lush valleys, pristine lakes, and red-tiled villages.

By summer, Delphi will provide access to the 500-mile Pindus Trail, a 42-day trek through the Pindus Mountains from the Albanian border to Delphi’s foothills, offering a glimpse into lesser-known Greek communities.

“Start by visiting the seat of the ancient world’s most famous oracle and then hike along the flanks of Mount Parnassus toward the summit of Mount Giona, passing through cedar forests, Byzantine monasteries and charming, time-lost villages,” wrote Alex Sakalis, New York Times Contributor.

In response to the destination’s international recognition, the Region of Central Greece highlighted that Delphi’s rich tourism offerings and commitment to sustainability inspired its inclusion in the 2025 recommendations.

“The global promotion of the Region of Central Greece is yielding results,” stated Central Greece Vice Governor Fani Papathoma. “We remain committed to systematic efforts, utilizing the latest tools and adhering to our strategic plan to showcase our region worldwide.”

The region’s plan includes key projects, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund:

Eastern Thermae Complex: Consolidation, restoration, and promotion of the site (700,000 euros)

Ancient Gymnasium of Delphi: Consolidation, restoration, and promotion (1.3 million euros)

Western Part of Ancient Delphi: Highlighting and promotion (950,000 euros)
