As part of this initiative, the local government will launch a digital promotional program to highlight the cultural offerings of Skiathos. In addition, technological upgrades will be implemented in civil protection, education, transport, and other public services to better serve both residents and visitors. Mayor Thodoris Tzoumas and Minister Dimitris Papastergiou recently met to discuss the details of their collaboration on the digital transformation of the island. Skiathos goes digital According to Tzoumas, the Ministry of Digital Governance approved funding of over 136,000 euros for the “Experience Skiathos AR” project, aimed at showcasing and promoting the island’s rich cultural heritage. Additionally, the ministry will allocate 210,000 euros to support the municipality’s digital transformation initiatives, including: – A smart warning system for responding to risks such as flooding, fires, and earthquakes – A nurse management platform to streamline nursery’s services – An electronic payment system with personalized notifications for citizens – A digital document circulation and signature system for faster citizen services – A smart accessibility system to assist individuals with mobility challenges – A traffic management office, including real-time vehicle tracking, a register for damages, and maintenance scheduling for the municipal fleet. The ministry has also approved the “Syzefxis II” project, designed to upgrade the town hall’s internet connectivity. The project includes the installation of optical fiber, enabling high-capacity data transfers—such as videos and imaging tests—between visitors, residents, and municipal services. Additionally, funding was approved for the “WiFi4GR: Development of public wireless broadband internet access points” project, which will establish public wireless broadband access points. This initiative aims to offer free WiFi in both indoor and outdoor public spaces, enhancing connectivity for all.
