Titled “Digital Twin of the Volcano of Nisyros Island”, the project will feature a virtual tour that uses realistic measurements and provides a real-time simulation of the volcano’s conditions during the user’s digital visit. A “digital twin” is a virtual replica of a physical object or environment that simulates real-time conditions, allowing users to explore and interact with it as if they were physically present. It was approved by the Region of South Aegean, aiming to boost sustainable tourism on Nisyros while highlighting the volcano’s rich history and resilience. “By leveraging the latest digital technologies, Nisyros’ volcano will be accessible to people around the globe,” said Nisyros Mayor Christophis Koroneos. Nisyros is home to Greece’s youngest volcano, with the “Polivotis” crater — its largest — spanning 260 meters in diameter and 30 meters in depth. The island also includes five other craters, the largest of which is “Stefanos”. Led by Athens University Professor Athanasia Alonistioti, the project ensures both scientific precision and technological advancement. The model will offer users real-time insights into the volcano’s conditions, such as temperature and gas emissions. An interactive web platform will also be developed, combining a 2D map of the crater with the 3D digital representation. Through interactive icons, users will be able to explore detailed real-time data and view 360-degree perspectives from various locations. Part of the “South Aegean 2021-2027” program, the initiative is co-funded with 200,000 euros from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). According to the municipality, the project will not only provide a valuable educational resource for students and institutions but also promote sustainable tourism on Nisyros. The project is scheduled for completion by June 2027.
