The Greek Ministry of Infrastructure and Transportation has unveiled plans to upgrade Line 1 of the Athens Metro, with full operation expected by the end of 2026.

Known as the ISAP electric railway, Line 1 is the oldest of the three metro lines, connecting Kifissia to Piraeus. The upgrade project includes the renovation of 14 trains, which aims to enhance service efficiency and reduce travel times.

Transport Minister Christos Staikouras, during his visit to the construction site in Volos, was informed that the prototype wagon is ready in Spain, with the remaining wagons currently under construction and refurbishment.

“The goal is to have the first train ready and operational by November, and to deliver all 14 upgraded trains to Athens by the end of 2026, including eight that were previously out of service,” Staikouras explained.

According to the minister, the new trains will improve the quality of service, boost route efficiency, and shorten travel times for commuters.

In addition to the Line 1 upgrades, Staikouras announced that the Ministry of Transport is seeking additional funding to acquire new trains and upgrade Lines 2 and 3 of the Athens Metro. This initiative is part of a larger effort to modernize the city’s public transportation network.

At the same time, the construction of the new Metro Line 4 is progressing rapidly. The tunnel boring machine is expected to complete its work by late 2026, marking a significant milestone for the project.

Line 4 (Section A) will introduce 15 new underground stations, including Alsos Veikou, Galatsi, Elikonos, Kypseli, Dikastiria, Alexandras, Exarchia, Akadimias, Kolonaki, Evangelismos, Kaisariani, Panepistimioupoli, Ilissia, Zografou, and Goudi.
