Surveys, Trends & Stats European Aviation Sector Calls for Stronger EU Support to Reach Net-Zero by 2050 by GTP editing team 4 February 2025 written by GTP editing team 4 February 2025 0 comments Share 0FacebookTwitterLinkedinWhatsappEmail 32 The European aviation industry has updated its decarbonisation roadmap, urging the European Commission to take immediate action in support of the sector’s ambitious goal to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Industry leaders are calling for an Aviation Strategy that will help accelerate their transition, highlighting the strategic importance of aviation for Europe’s economy and competitiveness. The updated plan, presented in the “Destination 2050 – A Route to Net Zero European Aviation” report, outlines key steps to cut emissions, including advancements in aircraft technology, the increased use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), more efficient air traffic management, and operational improvements. According to the report, which was launched by a consortium of European aviation associations, 83 percent of the projected emissions reductions will come from SAF and new aircraft and engine technologies. “With efficient EU policy measures, we can secure aviation’s vital and strategic importance while driving social and economic progress throughout Europe,” the Chairs of Airlines for Europe (A4E), Airports Council International Europe (ACI Europe), ASD, CANSO Europe, and European Regions Airline Association (ERA) said in a joint statement. The industry stressed that while it is investing heavily in sustainability initiatives, the European Commission must deliver additional support to ensure success. This includes implementing an EU industrial strategy for SAF to bring down costs and boosting research and innovation through programs such as Clean Aviation for new aircraft technologies and SESAR for improving air traffic management. Policy support is key The aviation sector called on European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to adopt an Aviation Strategy that reflects the critical role the industry plays in Europe’s economy. “It is critical the European Commission delivers an Aviation Strategy this year, grounded in decarbonisation while maintaining competitiveness,” the industry leaders highlighted. Among the policy recommendations, the sector is urging the Commission to include aviation in the Clean Industrial Deal and Sustainable Transport Investment Plan (STIP). This would provide the necessary regulatory and financial framework for the sector to achieve its climate goals. The report’s findings make it clear that time is of the essence. “The new Destination 2050 report shows that the European aviation industry has a clear and actionable pathway to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050,” industry leaders said. “But urgent action must happen now.” Urgency and opportunity The roadmap underscores that transitioning to net-zero is not just a climate imperative but also an opportunity for Europe to remain competitive globally. Developing new aircraft technologies, scaling up SAF production, and enhancing operational efficiency could solidify Europe’s leadership in sustainable aviation. “There’s not a moment to lose,” the joint statement concluded. “Acting today will ensure a strong, competitive, and more sustainable aviation industry for tomorrow.” Join the 15,000+ travel executives who read our newsletter Follow GTP Headlines on Google News to keep up to date with all the latest on tourism and travel in Greece.
