As seismic activity continues to affect Santorini, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis reassured the public on Wednesday that experts are closely monitoring the situation, with all necessary precautions in place.

Following a briefing by the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Mitsotakis highlighted that while the situation remains fluid, Greece’s renowned scientific community is fully engaged in studying the area’s unique geological phenomena.

Mitsotakis urged island residents to remain calm and cooperate with authorities. He stressed that daily updates would be provided based on new scientific data.

He also highlighted Santorini’s unique geological significance, which attracts global scientific attention. “The Santorini region is a unique geological ‘laboratory’ in the world,” Mitsotakis said, underscoring the importance of ongoing research.

Seismic phenomena and government response

Experts in attendance at the meeting outlined the three distinct seismic phenomena currently being monitored:

– Volcanic activity in Nea Kammeni, which has been observed in the past and does not pose immediate risks.
– The underwater volcano of Kolumbo, which is under continuous study and monitoring.
– The most concerning phenomenon, related to tectonic activity along the fault line, which has caused a series of prolonged earthquakes.

“We are slightly more optimistic today than we were yesterday, though we cannot make any definitive predictions,” Mitsotakis commented. He called on everyone to follow the directions of the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, which is guided by the latest scientific data from monitoring committees.

Mitsotakis confirmed that all relevant authorities are mobilized and state resources have been deployed to Santorini and surrounding islands to ensure preparedness for any eventuality.
