The climate for the Greek capital showed signs of improvement at the EIBTM 2012 exhibition as many professionals expressed “last minute” interest in the Greek capital for the hosting of conferences, incentive trips and corporate meetings next year, the Athens Development and Destination Management Agency said today, Tuesday, 4 December.

Since 2009, the Association of Greek Tourism Enterprises (SETE) has undertaken the initiative of promoting gastronomy as a pillar of Greek Tourism. For its newest project, “Gastronomy in the marketing menu of Greek tourism,” to get off the ground in the next three years, the association needs 500,000 euros.

Volunteer group “Up Greek Tourism” today, Monday, 3 December, launched its third crowd-funding and social media campaign to gather funds and set up a new billboard on Piccadilly Circus, London, to promote Greek tourism.

The need to improve the environmental footprint of Greek tourism destinations through the closer cooperation of the country’s public and private organizations was called for by major tour operators at the first Conference on Green Tourism in Greece held in Stockholm, Sweden, on Thursday, 22 November.

The general manager of Mediterranean Palace, Yiannis Aslanis, and the president and CEO of Helexpo, Paris Mavridis, hosted a party on Friday, 23 November, within the sideline’s of Philoxenia 2012, in honor of the hosted buyers of this year’s exhibition.

“This year is not only a difficult year but it is the fourth difficult year for the hotel sector,” the Hellenic Federation of Hoteliers president, Yiannis Retsos, said during the federation’s annual council of hotel associations. The council was held on the sidelines of the 28th International Tourism Exhibition Philoxenia held recently in Thessaloniki.

Following the Museum’s renovation and the new thematic displays Scenes of Daily Life in Antiquity and Ancient Greek Art, the MCA re-opened its permanent exhibition Cyprus: Aspects of Ancient Art and Culture, featuring the Thanos N. Zintilis Collection of Cypriot Antiquities, one of the most important of its kind worldwide and second only to the Museum’s renowned Cycladic Art collection.

An innovative smartphone application, under the name “Amazing Athens,” geared to promote the Greek capital as a destination was presented yesterday, Wednesday, 28 November, by Greek Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni at the Acropolis Museum.

Anatolia Hotel in Thessaloniki held its traditional cocktail party at the hotels’ Aqua Bar Restaurant on the sidelines of the 28th International Tourism Exhibition Philoxenia (22-25 November).

The 28th International Tourism Exhibition Philoxenia saw a major increase in trade visitors this year compared with last year’s exhibition, according to a press release of organizer Helexpo.
