A meeting was held recently, headed by Minister for Mercantile Marine and Island Policy Georgios Voulgarakis, to discuss the necessary measures that must be taken to protect the environment in lieu of the Burgas-Alexandroupolis oil pipeline project.

Club Hotel Casino Loutraki recently took an initiative, in cooperation with New York College, to partially finance Bachelor and MBA degrees for some twenty employees. This initiative is part of the company’s aim to further educate its staff and thus enhance its work force. The courses will take place in the work place.

Tourism Development Minister Aris Spiliotopoulos presented the world with the new image of Greece at World Travel Market, which was held in London last month. The new slogan and logo for Greece was revealed at the inauguration of the Greek National Tourism Organization stand where Mr. Spiliotopoulos outlined the two stages of the tourism promotion campaign and explained the theory behind it.

The 23rd Philoxenia opened its gates to buyers and sellers from all around the world last month with little different to present compared with previous years. The most significant business event took place on opening day as some 100 hosted buyers from some 30 countries met with exhibitors.

Members of the travel industry in support of breast cancer awareness month (October) took two initiatives recently. Delta Air Line’s employees and customers showed their support and raised money for the cause as did the hotel Grande Bretagne in Athens in cooperation with Estee Lauder cosmetics and the ministry of health and social solidarity.

Ovadias Tours, in October, communicated its ideology behind a campaign for the promotion of Greece in Asia. The tour operator sent a letter to Tourism Development Minister Aris Spiliotopoulos suggesting a new dimension in Greece’s promotional campaign, which, according to the tour operator, was well received.

Some 18,000 visitors passed through the Exclusive Yachting 2007 exhibition held recently at the Marina of Agios Kosmas. The five-day event offered visitors, according to the organizers, Europartners, a unique experience of yachting and lifestyle up to par with other international exhibitions of this kind held in Cannes, Monaco and Genova.

The Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association chose World Maritime Day (27/9/07) to announce that “ships remain the safest and most environmentally friendly means of travel as recent statistics show activity on land is responsible for eighty percent of sea pollution whereas maritime activity is responsible for only ten percent, having seen a two percent decrease since 1990.”
