Some 46 speakers, through case studies, showed how important and viable sports is to a country’s tourism sector during last month’s International Association of Scientific Experts in Tourism’s (AIEST) 53rd world congress held at the Divani Apollo Hotel in Kavouri September 8-11 on the theme “Tourism and Sports.” The congress was opened by Development Minister Akis Tsohatzopoulos.

The 7th International Symposium of the Organization of World Heritage Cities, which takes place as we go to press, opened on the island of Rodos on September 23 and continues on till the 26th at the Marika Capsis 2000 Confrerence Center within the Sofitel Capsis Hotel complex.

Next year’s domestic tourism fair, Panorama, the ninth, takes place once again at the OLP Exhibition Center in Piraeus. The fair opens on April 22 and continues through to April 25.

The Organization of World Heritage Cities’ 7th international symposium will take place in the medieval city on the island of Rodos between Sept. 23 and 26. The symposium is under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Culture and the Cultural Olympics and is in coorporation with UNESCO and the International Center for the Study, the Preservation and the Restoration of Cultural Property.

Blue Star Ferries managed to increase passenger traffic on the Piraeus-Chania route by some 43% during the month of July when compared with traffic on the route in July of last year. Its vessel Blue Star 2, which was placed on the route this year for the first time, covered almost half of all passenger and car traffic, according to a company report. Another two passenger vessels and one transport vessel, all owned by ANEK Lines, ply the route.
