According to the 2013 Post Office Worldwide Holiday Costs Barometer, Greece made 14th place in the table of 42 holiday hotspots based on the prices of eight popular tourist items. The basket of popular products include dinner for two, a bottle of lager, light refreshments and suncream. The barometer showed that the current data should help boost demand for Greece as room rates in the country have fallen 40 percent and holiday spending costs have dropped by 18 percent, the biggest fall in Europe. The island of Corfu was chosen to represent holiday costs in Greece and a total spend of £57.50 on the basket of items was added up. Among other key findings of the barometer, Spain and Sri Lanka share the top spot for value of the 42 destinations surveyed and Turkey returned to the top 10 after resort prices fell 16 percent in the past 12 months. Also, prices have fallen 20 percent in Egypt (13th place), thanks to sterling’s surge in value against the Egyptian pound and lower resort costs. Bulgaria and Portugal are also featured among the 10 cheapest destinations in places 6th and 7th respectively.
