Proceeding dynamically in the midst of recession and contributing more and more to the rebirth of the Greek economy, Greek tourism has not only remained uncompromising but also has been widely accepted by the State and the citizens as the sector of economy that will lead the country towards development over the next 10 years. With the McKinsey study “Greece, 10 Years Ahead,” the basics towards this direction have already been created. The next step has already begun. SETE, in collaboration with McKinsey and the State is compiling the Tourism 2021 study, specifying the proposals for tourism. The goal of the new strategic plan as well as its implementation is for annual tourist arrivals in 2021 to exceed 24 million in number, with a per capita expenditure of approximately 800 euros – which would generate direct annual revenue of 18-19 billion euros and a total of 48-50 billion euros, as compared to 32 billion euros in 2012, i.e. an additional 9 points to the country’s GDP. In 2021, there will be 1 million persons directly and indirectly employed in tourism, as compared to 680.000 today. SETE’s 12th Tourism & Development Conference will analyze specific proposals from the plan that concern new tourism products that must be created; infrastructure that will be needed; and necessary investments that must go forward so the study’s goals can be reached. The “Tourism & Development” conferences are established interventions of SETE to open discussions and create public dialogue on tourism and are aimed towards investors, entrepreneurs, senior business executives and public sector officials who aspire to have an active role in the development of Greek tourism.
