In the first of a new series on holidaying in the Greek islands, UK newspaper The Guardian recently presented the Sporades and Evia, the country’s second largest island.

According to The Guardian’s Andrew Bostock, the four islands of the Sporades group – Skiathos, SkopelosAlonissos and Skyros – are ideal destinations for holiday. In his article, Mr. Bostock gives a description of each of the islands, makes recommendations on where to stay, where to eat and informs which tourist attractions should not be missed. Following are highlights from the article.

The Sporades and Evia

Skiathos: The most-traveled of the islands thanks to its international airport, and its fame lies mainly in its sandy beaches.

Skopelos: Its rugged scenery is perhaps more beautiful and certainly less developed than Skiathos. Its charms were celebrated in the film Mamma Mia!

Alonissos: The island lies in the middle of a marine park and is surrounded by a group on uninhabited satellite islands.

Skyros: By far the least visited of the Sporades group but travelers who go there are rewarded by an atmosphere that blends traditional Greek village life with an increasingly trendy “alternative” vibe.

Mr. Bostock also makes reference to Evia, which is not strictly part of the Sporades but also lies off Greece’s eastern coast. Evia is the second largest island in Greece after Crete, and located conveniently close to Athens. According to the publication, Evia deserves more recognition.

Evia deserves more recognition.

I couldn’t agree more! Evia is a magnificent place, yet so forgoten by Hellenic Tourism Organisation (EOT). it’s big enough.

I guess people of Evia should group up and promote their place on their own. In the meantime, I wouldn’t mind creating a website about Evia just like DestinationSkiathos.com

Mr Bostock found out first hand that Evia is not just an island. It’s a cosmos.
