The data showed an increase of 69 more aircraft and almost 10,000 more tourists. More specifically, last May, 385 international flights landed at Zakynthos airport and carried 64,653 passengers against 316 aircraft and 54,894 passengers during the same month last year. “This is an impressive start for this year’s tourism season on Zakynthos,” the president of the Laganas Hotel Association, Christina Tetradi, said in an announcement. According to the data, most tourists to Zakynthos Airport arrived from The Netherlands (79.03 percent rise), Poland (48.89 percent), Germany (34.18 percent), Sweden (23.85 percent), Austria (20.65 percent) and the United Kingdom (11.62 percent). Arrivals from Russia were down 18.35 percent, which was expected due to the devaluation of the national currency. However, Greeks mainly arrive by ferry to Zakynthos and, according to the island’s port authority, arrivals last month were down 5.82 percent compared to May 2013. According to Ms. Tetradi, hotel bookings are disappointing. “Although prices are very attractive, the Greeks prefer to holiday in summerhouses of relatives and friends,” she said.
