A total of 388,129 cruise passengers visited the Ionian island of Corfu in the first eight months of the year, down by 7.6 percent against the same period last year, welcoming 256 luxury liners compared to 260 in 2014, the Corfu Port Authority (CPA) said this week.

According to CPA statistics, the decline is due to a 51 percent drop in cruise traffic in March and April.

August brought in 95,657 passengers on board 57 cruise ships, still however not exceeding last year’s figures at 106,396 passengers and 62 liners, recording a decrease of 10.1 percent. At the same time, the CPA reported an 8.1 percent drop in the number of cruise ship arrivals.

The best day of the year thus far was August 2014, with the port welcoming seven cruise liners with a total of 10,602 passengers – mostly British, Italian and German – setting a new single day record.

For the months ahead, the CPA hopes to gain ground, expecting over 230,000 passengers on board 150 cruise ships.

The January-August figures account for 63.2 percent of this year’s total traffic.
