The average online price of hotel rooms in popular destinations in Greece for August has increased by 20 percent to 177 euros, compared to the same month last year, according to data provided by hotel comparison website Trivago and published by Greek daily Kathimerini.

The average online hotel rate concerns the few rooms that are available this month, as bookings for the majority of rooms in popular Greek destinations were made much earlier at lower prices in accordance to signed contracts with foreign tour operators. Moreover, many rooms were booked by international markets during the first booking period at significant discount rates.

However, compared to 24 other European destinations, this month Greece ranks third with the highest online hotel rates.

The most expensive rate this month is in Switzerland with 193 euros per night for a double room. In regards to Greece’s competitive destinations, Spain ranks fifth with 151 euros per night, Portugal is in the seventh place with 148 euros and Cyprus is in 14th place with 119 euros.

Data on the average online price of hotel rooms in 50 popular European cities showed that Athens ranks 22nd with 107 euros per night.

This month, hotels in Kiev have the lowest average online price (55 euros per night for a double room) and the most expensive city for hotel accommodation via online booking is Monaco at 435 euros per night.
