Athens and Santorini Top Spring 2018 Destinations for Travelers to Greece

Athens and Santorini — particularly Fira, Oia, Imerovigli, Kamari and Firostefani — top the most popular spring hot spots for foreign holidaymakers searching to travel in Greece, according to a survey released by hotel online search engine trivago.

Based on search volume in the first two weeks of March for trips to take place during the March-April-May three-month period, Athens (average preferred price of 109 euros / average stay duration of 4.1 days), Fira on Santorini (average preferred price of 158 euros / average stay duration of 5 days) and Oia on Santorini (average preferred price of 321 euros / average stay duration of 5 days) are the most popular destinations this season for incoming tourism.

The destinations are followed by Mykonos, Imerovigli (Santorini), Rhodes (main town), Thessaloniki, Chania (Crete), Firostefani (Santorini) and Kamari (Santorini).

Searches made on trivago also revealed that Greece remains a favorite destination to visitors particularly from the UK and Germany, followed by holidaymakers from Italy and France.

Regarding the average price foreigners are willing to pay to vacation in Greece, the Americans were found to have chosen the highest average rate that reaches 143 euros per night (average stay duration of 4.1 days), followed by the French who chose an average price per night at 138 euros (average stay duration of 5.6 days). UK travelers come in third as they chose an average price of 134 euros per night (average stay duration of 6.6 days), followed by the Germans who chose an average price per night at 131 euros, as well as to stay the most days in Greece (average stay duration of 7.5 days).

Regarding Greek travelers, trivago’s data reveals that they will travel in fact travel during the spring season and are willing to pay for holidays in the country on an average of 86 euros per night. Their holidays will last for an average of 2.6 days.

The destinations most preferred by the Greeks are Athens, Thessaloniki, Nafplio, Corfu (a popular destination for the Easter holiday), Ioannina, Chania, Loutraki, Rhodes (main town), Kalavryta and Volos.

“Analyzing the types of travelers who will spend their summer holidays in Greece (domestic and foreign travelers), we notice that most of them will be leisure travelers, who will stay on average for 8,9 days and spend an average of 126 euros per night,” trivago said.
