Greek MPs passed a bill covering thematic and special interest tourism, the upgrade of tourism training and the strengthening of entrepreneurship in tourism by majority vote on Thursday.

The new law is expected to pave the way for the diversification and development of Greece’s tourism sector in the coming years.

Addressing parliament, Tourism Minister Elena Kountoura said the new framework addresses long-standing legislative, administrative and operational gaps while setting out for the first time a framework for thematic and special interest tourism, which was unexploited and unregulated in the past.

Kountoura went on to note that the bill has been warmly welcomed by the tourism industry and is of utmost importance for tourism, a key sector making a considerable contribution to restoring the Greek economy back to health.

The 19-article bill defines thematic and special interest Greek tourism products by category, details the certification procedures required and terms of operation, and sets the groundwork for the creation of related professions and business activities.

Besides regulating the development of cultural, faith, health and wellness, agro, sports, city and educational tourism products, it aims to enhance their attractiveness and boost competitiveness, while setting the standards for the further development of other alternative forms of tourism.

At the same time, it modernizes the institutional framework covering tourism education.
