Photo © ANEK Greek passenger shipping company ANEK Lines, in collaboration with marine communication specialist Telenor Maritime, has launched its new “Wifi on Board” service, aiming to offer all passengers an upgraded internet browsing experience. Passengers traveling to Chania with the company’s “El. Venizelos” ferry, as well as to Ancona with its “Olympic Champion”, can now browse the internet from every space of the ships. “A seamless and fast connection ensures that every passenger stays online during the trip, enjoying the opportunity to have fun, receive information or even work while at sea through a laptop, tablet or mobile device,” the company said in an announcement. Passengers can access the internet in the ferries’ living rooms, modern cabins, coffee shops and at ANEK’s self-service or a la carte restaurants that serve Cretan and Mediterranean dishes. ANEK Lines’ online data packages are available for purchase at www.getwifi.no. Furthermore, pre-paid vouchers are also available at the bars and reception areas of the company’s “El. Venizelos” and Olympic Champion” ferries. The new service will soon be available on all vessels of ANEK Lines traveling to Crete, the Cyclades and the Aegean islands, as well as onboard the “Hellenic Spirit” and “Asterion II” ferries, which currently serve the Adriatic line. The new service is available through ANEK’s collaboration with Telenor Maritime, a member of Telenor ASA, one of the world’s major mobile operators. Telenor Maritime offers global mobile coverage, Internet, and backhaul for the offshore and fishing industry, cruise ships, and ferries. While travelling with F/B Eleftherios Venizelos from Piraeus to Chania, my phone connected to this network without any prompt or asking from approval and got charged.. wait for it.. 8.5€ per MB for 6 MB, that is 51 euros! Just put your phone into flight mode the moment you enter the ferry! Reply Andreas 18 June 2019 - 19:14 Attention: My cellphone also connected to a network driven by telenor (a cellphone nerwork, not the WiFi) on the vessel Oympic Champion. The user should be aware that this kind of connection is very expensive for calls and data!
